LEADING WITH A COACHING STYLE – FEEDBACK AND DEVELOPMENT

FEEDBACK IS ESSENTIAL FOR HIGH-PERFORMING TEAMS

Start growing and developing the people you lead

The “Feedback and Development” is a one-day course forming part of a series of six Leadership Conversations courses in collaboration with the UCT GSB. This short course teaches participants the basics of giving and receiving developmental feedback, incorporating elements of Integral theory. The goal is to create a more collaborative environment where team members can listen and speak freely as they develop.

Who will benefit from “Feedback and Development” course?

You will benefit from this course if you are an Executive, Manager, or Emerging Leader seeking to develop and grow their teams and those around them through understanding constructive, developmental feedback mechanisms.

What will I gain from this course?

This is what you will gain from the Leadership Conversation – Feedback & Development course:

  • An understanding of feedback conversations to ensure that they are constructive and inspire growth
  • Learning about the theory of feedback and how to adapt it to real-life situations
  • Improved self-awareness and understanding of own contribution to leadership challenges
  • Recognising the myths around feedback and why parties avoid having conversations around it
  • Moving from a place of one-dimensional feedback to conversations that are more engaging, leading to performance improvement

Our short courses deliver learning experiences that are personally transformative because better people make better leaders.

Whilst theory is interesting, in fact leadership is best learned through practice.  For that reason, this course is run in an experiential way, using a live-virtual approach on Zoom. Participants are asked to be willing to be fully themselves, fully engaged, open to being honest about themselves and their relationship to giving or receiving feedback in their life (no role plays) and to be prepared to find out more about themselves as leaders and human beings,

We run our programmes using adult learning principles:

Own experience:
Adults learn through their own experience – we therefore insist that we focus on real issues, not role play

Safe environment:
We take the time to create a safe, non-judgmental / confidential space to facilitate exploration and open curiosity

Anchor learning:
Participants anchor their learning in what really happens to them and their Organisation (i.e. apply to themselves and to each other, not told)

Accountability:
We ensure the framework is in place for participants to hold one another accountable

What does ‘live-virtual’ mean?

The following key elements are necessary in order to keep our workshops focused, interactive and dynamic and still meet the desired outcomes.

Theory:

  • we ask participants to read course material where possible before, we then deepen in dialogue
  • In the workshop, we keep to max 15 mins of theory bursts with minimal use of PowerPoint
  • Regular breakouts in small groups to keep a high level of interaction and deepen understanding of the theory.  Where possible we have a member of faculty present to facilitate the discussion / answer questions

“Zoom fatigue”:

  • Regular breaks: in order to keep the energy & engagement high, we have found that a short 5-10min break every hour including a body exercise (stretching, breathing, standing) works. This replaces coffee/tea breaks. We take an hour for lunch.

High faculty to participant ratio:

In order to ensure an optimum online learning experience, the ratio of faculty to participant should be 1:5

We are able to offer this ratio by making use of the Centre for Coaching’s large international faculty of professional integral coaches who have all trained with us and who have been supporting our academic and/or organisational programmes for a number of years.

“The Journey” by Mary Oliver

While the world around us conspires to keep us distracted, we would like to invite you to take a different path and make an intentional choice to take time to reflect over the festive season. Perhaps the poem by Mary Oliver, The Journey, might provide us with the necessary inspiration – if you do not know it (or even if you do), we encourage you to read it.

The Journey

by Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice –
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do –
determined to save
the only life you could save.

– Mary Oliver, from Dream Work

Online ensa Mental Health First Aid Training for our Swiss Graduates

We are delighted to announce that we have arranged a personalised offering of this important course on Mental Health for all Graduates of the Centre for Coaching (Switzerland). Dr Mecky McNeil, the lead facilitator, is one of our graduates and will therefore bring an Integral focus to the teaching.

WHY MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID?

One in four people worldwide suffer from a mental health problem in any one year. But even though mental health issues are common, many people are not well informed about how to recognise them, how to respond to an affected person, or about the treatments available. Plenty of myths and misconceptions exist around mental illness resulting in widespread stigma and discrimination.

The internationally recognized, well-validated, evidence-based ensa Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants simple, practical skills to help work colleagues, family, friends, or any other person in need. Participants learn how to recognise signs of mental ill health in others and are encouraged to break down barriers and to listen in a non-judgmental way. They are empowered to respond to people in psychological distress, including in a crisis situation, enabling them to access support they might need as part of their journey to recovery.

Several randomized controlled trials have shown that Mental Health First Aid training improves a participant’s knowledge of mental illness, reduces their stigmatizing behaviour towards others and increases self-confidence in their ability to help those in need. In addition, it strengthens the individual’s own mental wellbeing.

A deeper awareness of this subject is essential for coaches, especially during these challenging times.

Testimonial from one of our own:

Flora Bami, CfD (previously ACC) and PCC alumna, has had the opportunity to do this course, twice!  Hear what she has to say:

“I had the opportunity to attend both the English and Swiss version of the MHFA training. I thoroughly enjoyed the course delivered by Mecky and Michelle in Geneva; I feel I have learnt some new life skills and tools and gained a greater awareness and understanding of Mental Health issues. I am more confident if I found myself in a situation involving mental health, both in my daily life and my coaching practice. I am armed with the knowledge and skills needed to recognize, empathize, and provide support to individuals with mental health barriers.

This course is very informational, practical, eye opening and enjoyable. The instructors were amazing, knowledgeable, and keeping me engaged as well as handling all my questions with care and the necessary attention.

I highly recommend this course to everyone but especially to fellow coaches who are open to educate themselves on a deeper level on mental health. Mental Health awareness is critical and necessary to be able to stay present and fully focused on our clients, leaving behind any bias or misunderstandings we may have on mental health from our past”.

Flora Bami, ICF Integral Coach / Diversity, Inclusion & Wellbeing expert
