Coaching Practice: Speaking from the heart

We need to listen to our hearts more in order to tap into what our essence has to offer and share it with those around us.

A practice that we invite you into is to sense when might be an appropriate time to tap into what your heart has to say, an expression of love if you will, and preface what you say with “If I were to speak from the heart, I would say …” while not thinking your response through but really listening to your heart and allowing it to express what it has to say.

This quote from Viktor Frankl might inspire you as you step into this practice:

“Love is the only way to grasp another human being in the innermost core of their personality. No one can become fully aware of the very essence of another human being unless they love them. By their love, they are enabled to see the essential traits and features in the beloved person; and even more, they see that which is potential, which is not yet actualised, but ought to be actualised. Furthermore, by their love, the loving person enables the beloved person to actualise these potentialities. By making them aware of the what they can be and of what they should become, they make these potentialities come true.” — Viktor Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning —

Set a reminder in your calendar to try out saying “If I were to speak from the heart, I would say …” at least once per day.

At the end of the week, look back, read the quote above from Viktor Frankl and reflect on what happened and what you are learning about yourself. What was easy? What was more difficult? With whom? What might you like to try differently? How is your relationship to love evolving?

Support: who might be willing to be your accountability partner in this? You can also simply ask them to check in on you to see if you are doing “that thing.” The key is to ask for support.

Duration: try this out for at least a month and then review.

“It’s our encountering everything with love that leads to true fulfillment for the human heart” – A.H. Almaas.
